13. Frequently Asked Questions:
Which information is saved by the app to the device internal memory?
The app saves all its information in the /scanpet folder. This information is the data you input from the app and is saved in Excel files. You can also save your configuration to /scanpet/conf in a plain text file. All the files and its data are saved when you request it from the app
Which information is saved by the app to external SDcard?
Nothing, but the app may access to this kind of memory to reach photos if you ask to link them to your item database. Example: take a photo from Gallery and add it to an item in your item database.
Which information is saved to external devices, server or to the cloud?
The app can transfer your information by emails, Dropbox and Google Drive. But always when you request it from the app. There is no background or automatic process to collect, store or transfer any information to any server.
Why does SCANPET request permission to access camera?
The app needs to access the camera to scan barcodes, and also to take photos if you want to link a photo to an item in your database. The app never accesses the camera sensors except you request it from the app. Also the app will never record videos.
Why does SCANPET request permission to access Wifi connections and network?
The app includes a Wifi scanner that let you scan a barcode and send it to your computer by a wifi link (though VNC protocol). To achieve this, the app needs to access Wifi. Also Google Drive & Dropbox & Email options will need access to network to send data when you request the app to do it.
Why does SCANPET request permission to access Identity and Contacts?
The app will let you send the files you have created to Google Drive & Dropbox. To do this we need to link one of the accounts defined in your device to Drive. So we have to you show you a select window so you can link SCANPET to one of these accounts.
To do this we need these permissions. We follow the standard procedure & Drive SDK defined by Google Drive team which need these permissions. This means we never have access to your password or other personal information. This kind of data is handled internally by Android and Google Drive service.
We don’t access to identity or contact information beyond this and of course we don’t send messages to your contacts.
Why does SCANPET request permission to access Location (GPS)?
The app uses the GPS only if you create Longitude and Latitude columns. This data is only collected and saved to your database only when you request it. If not it will never access to your location even if you have created Longitude and Latitude columns. Also this information is only saved to your local device files (output and base files) when you request it from app buttons. This information is never sent to other parties or external servers by SCANPET.
It doesn’t focus or scan on my phone
Most reports of things like this are unfortunately traceable to camera driver problems. This can be true even if other apps like the camera work. The problem is of the form:
• Barcode Scanner app asks device if it supports feature X
• Devices reports it supports X
• Barcode Scanner requests feature X
• Camera driver does not support it correctly, and fails to initialize
• All initialization including light, focus and other settings fail, making scanning hard or impossible
First, try disabling camera features in Settings. Look for “Device Bug Workarounds”. Usually, disabling one or more of these will work around the issue.
The app sets off a virus warning
The app contains no viruses or malware.
If you get a virus warning then it is false positive. On Android virus detection can not read the app binaries (like it happens in your desktop). So usually the detection virus software needs to guess things and sometimes do it wrongly. As said before the app can use the GPS, include ads and access to Wifi. Some antivirus may think all these features in the same app deserve a warning.
The app won’t download or install
These are functions of Google Play, and outside the application’s control. We do get some reports of stuck downloads which can be fixed by rebooting the phone. If that doesn’t help, please contact the phone manufacturer or your carrier.
